Garnacho’s single campaign with Chelsea fell short of expectations, a reality underscored by his lone strike in league play.
To his credit, he was in the starting lineup for just nine matches after Liam Rosenior took charge, a stretch of 29 games that also featured Calum McFarlane’s second stint as temporary manager late in the season.
In all competitions, he recorded a more decent tally of eight goals and four assists across 43 outings last term.
Yet, apart from a brace against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup, his other strikes came against modest opponents such as Qarabag, Wrexham, Port Vale and Cardiff City.
It also grew clear that Garnacho was starting to lose the backing of some fans due to a perceived shortage of effort.
He also drew criticism at times for not staying with his defensive assignments, notably during a home loss to West Ham when he was withdrawn at the interval after being involved in the buildup to two opposition goals.
Insiders have indicated that Garnacho maintained a professional attitude and put in the work away from the spotlight, which stands as a positive sign for what lies ahead.
In a conversation with Premier League Productions toward the end of the season, the one-time Manchester United wide player acknowledged he had made some “bad things” at his former club because he was frustrated by a lack of minutes.
People close to the atmosphere within the Chelsea squad suggested Garnacho found it difficult to blend into the collective and often appeared somewhat removed.
Even so, no major discord marks his exit from Stamford Bridge. The club simply regarded him as a player they were prepared to let leave as they looked to strengthen the team.
