Aston Villa have announced the acquisition of Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho on a temporary deal, as the reshaping of the squad continues at Villa Park.
The season-long arrangement includes a conditional clause making the transfer permanent. Garnacho had moved to the London club the previous August from Manchester United for a reported £40m. Villa are expected to match a similar valuation for the player, whose impact was limited at his former club despite making 43 appearances across all competitions and finding the net eight times.
Garnacho was cleared to leave after discussions made it clear he would not be a guaranteed starter under new head coach Xabi Alonso. He did not join the squad when they reconvened for pre-season training, as previously agreed.
It was mutually decided he would train away from the first-team setup while his exit was being arranged. Despite being named in Argentina’s provisional 55-man squad, he was not selected for this summer’s World Cup finals.
“We are thrilled to have Alejandro. He possesses immense talent, youth, and a strong desire to contribute to our vision. We are truly pleased,” Unai Emery stated.
This marks Villa’s third addition of the window, following the arrivals of Johan Manzambi and João Gomes, continuing a well-established transfer pattern. The recent nine-figure move that sent Morgan Rogers to west London this week extended a sequence of dealings between the two sides, which includes the sales of Carney Chukwuemeka and Omari Kellyman to the same destination in 2022 and 2024, Ian Maatsen making the opposite journey in 2024, and Axel Disasi’s short-term switch to Villa in 2025.
Another former Chelsea player, Jadon Sancho, spent the previous campaign on loan at Villa from United, but despite being available on a free transfer, a permanent deal was not pursued. Youri Tielemans has also left Villa for Manchester United this month after his £35m release clause was activated, as the Europa League winners restructure with Champions League football on the horizon, albeit while operating under financial restrictions imposed by the governing body.
Earlier in this window, Villa were issued a partially suspended financial penalty by Uefa for a major breach of the squad-cost regulations for 2025. A significant portion of the sanction is suspended provided the club substantially improves their squad-cost ratio in 2026, meanwhile they face limits on registering new players for their upcoming Champions League campaign.
