After arriving from Swedish side Djurgarden in 2024, Bergvall was given only limited minutes toward the end of last season under De Zerbi.
The 20-year-old was in the starting lineup for the Italian’s first match in charge — a 1-0 loss at Sunderland — and then came off the bench on four occasions.
Since then, the club has recruited midfielders Sandro Tonali in a £100m move from Newcastle United and Mateus Fernandes for £85m from West Ham.
“I haven’t had a conversation with Lucas yet,” De Zerbi said. “I will in the coming days and we’ll make the best choice for the club, for Lucas, for me, for all of us, without any issues. Lucas is a huge, huge talent.
“There will be intense competition for places because, in the end, I think we’ll have two players for every position.
“If he wants to stay, I’ll be happy. If not, we’ll have to find a new solution with [sporting director] Johan Lange and [chief executive] Vinai [Venkatesham]. Once the decision to leave is made, it’s out of my hands.”
Tottenham have also reinforced their defence with Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi, and De Zerbi says the “aim now is to complete the attacking positions.”
“First of all, I think our transfer window isn’t over yet,” he added. “We need to finish our business, we have to bring in another couple of players — maybe more, maybe not fewer, but a couple.”
Bergvall is part of Tottenham’s travelling squad in New Zealand, but wingers Mohammed Kudus (thigh) and Dejan Kulusevski (knee) did not make the trip as they recover from long-term injuries.
“Kudus is very close. I think when we return to London he’ll be ready to start working with us,” De Zerbi said. “That’s a big boost for us. Kudus is another vital player.
“For Kulusevski, we’ll have to assess him over the next couple of weeks. He’s another important player. After a full season without a single game, we need to analyse things more carefully and not take any risks — first of all for him, and then for us.”
Meanwhile, Tottenham attacking midfielder Xavi Simons said “the first four days were the worst days of my life” as he recalled the anterior cruciate ligament injury he suffered in April.
The Netherlands international required surgery on the serious knee injury and missed the 2026 World Cup.
“I couldn’t sleep, I didn’t eat for a week,” he told the club’s official website. “I was in a lot of pain. I was vomiting and felt dizzy — it was everything. That kind of suffering, I wouldn’t wish on anyone.
“I don’t know how it is for other players, but for me it was like my whole body was asking, ‘What just happened?’
“That’s how it is. I’m happy and in a good place now.”
