Chelsea are reportedly holding discussions about signing Danny Welbeck from Brighton.
Welbeck has emerged as an unexpected option to strengthen Xabi Alonso’s attack after registering 13 goals in 37 Premier League appearances last season. There is confidence at Stamford Bridge that an agreement could be reached, with Brighton believed to be prepared to let the 35-year-old forward leave for a suitable fee despite having one year left on his contract.
An agreement could make further departures from Stamford Bridge more likely, as questions remain over the futures of Liam Delap and Nicolas Jackson. Delap is regarded as the backup to João Pedro, who delivered an impressive first Chelsea season with 15 league goals. Jackson, meanwhile, spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich and is attracting interest from Aston Villa.
Delap was expected to receive another season to establish himself after struggling during his first campaign following a £30m transfer from Ipswich a year earlier. However, this latest development appears to place his position at the club in doubt.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Welbeck also signals a notable shift in the club’s recruitment approach as they look to bring more experienced players into Alonso’s squad. The former Arsenal and Manchester United forward has made over 400 Premier League appearances and would represent the strongest move yet away from the previous focus on signing young, relatively untested talent with long-term potential.
Welbeck scored both goals when Brighton secured a 3-1 victory at Stamford Bridge last season. In March, he agreed to a 12-month contract that lasts until the conclusion of the 2026-27 campaign. Should the transfer go ahead, he would become the latest player or staff member to move from Brighton to Chelsea in recent years, following goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, midfielder Moises Caicedo and forward João Pedro.
