Manchester City midfielder Rodri is expected to be unavailable for a “brief rehabilitation period” after undergoing back surgery.
New manager Enzo Maresca revealed on Friday that Rodri was scheduled for an operation on Monday, adding that the midfielder “needs some time away to rest and recover before returning to the squad”.
A date for his comeback has yet to be confirmed.
City will meet Arsenal in the Community Shield on 16 August, followed by their opening Premier League fixture against Bournemouth on 23 August.
According to City, Rodri had “experienced discomfort for a while and has now received treatment intended to resolve the problem”.
Rodri has one year remaining on his current deal and continues to be associated with a potential transfer to Real Madrid after helping Spain win the World Cup this month. He also received the tournament’s best player award.
Injuries have significantly affected his previous two seasons, while a torn anterior cruciate ligament kept him out for the majority of City’s 2024-25 campaign.
