Former skipper Tavernier frequently bore the brunt of supporters’ frustration over Rangers’ shortcomings, even though he was arguably the club’s standout performer during the last decade.
Much of that criticism appeared undeserved, but Shankland accepts that intense scrutiny is part of captaining a club with such high expectations.
Ibrox supporters have wanted the striker to join for years because of his goalscoring talent, while his knowledge of Scottish football and lifelong connection to the club should further strengthen his appeal.
Rangers now have a manager on the touchline and a captain on the field whom fans believe understand the club, and Shankland says he is ready to handle the pressure in pursuit of success as skipper at Ibrox.
“When results are disappointing, people often expect the captain to speak on behalf of the squad,” Shankland said. “I understand that this is a responsibility I will have to accept.
“However, the satisfaction of achieving success with this club and leading it successfully is far greater than any pressure that may come with the role.”
Manager McInnes, who likewise made the switch from Tynecastle to Ibrox this summer, added: “Lawrence’s main advantage is that I have already seen at Hearts how effectively he leads a dressing room.
“He brings valuable experience to what remains a relatively young squad. He understands the club as a lifelong supporter and is fully aware of what is required from him, from me and from the entire team.”
