The Football Association of Wales has ended its backing for Gianni Infantino’s campaign to remain Fifa president after his mishandled attempt to sell private investors shares in the World Cup.
Infantino confirmed last week that he had abandoned the heavily criticised proposal, which three confederations opposed. However, his decade in charge of Fifa continues to face significant scrutiny.
UK prime minister Andy Burnham said on Friday that Infantino was not the right person to lead Fifa, while England’s Football Association demanded a thorough and rigorous examination of his leadership.
Infantino is expected to seek another term next March, but the FAW has become the first national football association to formally withdraw its support for the Swiss official.
In a statement, the FAW confirmed that it no longer supported Gianni Infantino’s bid to serve as Fifa president for the 2027–2031 term.
The organisation said shortcomings in governance, procedures, leadership, values, communication, stakeholder relations and decision-making had caused Infantino to lose its confidence in his ability to continue leading world football.
It added that any failure to place football’s best interests above everything else was unacceptable.
