Newcastle United have completed the £25.7m transfer of goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from Braga.
Despite recruiting 20-year-old Ewen Jaouen from Reims earlier this summer, Newcastle continued searching for a more experienced first-choice goalkeeper.
Hornicek, 24, travelled to Newcastle’s pre-season base in Spain over the weekend to complete the transfer and agree a five-year deal after his release clause was triggered.
“It has been an emotional few days since I first learned about the transfer, and I am delighted to finally be here,” said the Czech Republic international.
“Joining a different league is an excellent opportunity and one that fills me with excitement. I was given a wonderful reception as soon as I arrived and immediately experienced the welcoming nature of the club. Everyone has done a fantastic job of helping me settle in.
“Newcastle is clearly a city with an enormous passion for football. The 52,000 supporters inside St James’ Park produce a special atmosphere and drive the team forward in every match. I am eager to play in front of them.”
Newcastle monitored Hornicek after he recorded seven clean sheets during Braga’s journey to last season’s Europa League semi-finals, more than any other goalkeeper in the tournament.
Hornicek also demonstrated his ability with the ball, finishing second among goalkeepers in Portugal’s top division for completed passes with 846 and fourth for pass accuracy at 75% last season.
Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson praised the 24-year-old’s outstanding development over recent seasons.
“He has earned recognition as one of the finest young goalkeepers in European football,” Wilson said.
“Following his achievements last season, we expected several clubs to pursue Lukas this summer. However, it soon became clear that he was extremely enthusiastic about joining the project we are developing here.”
