Crystal Palace are poised to recruit Takehiro Tomiyasu on a free transfer after he impressed during a trial, while the club are also weighing up a move for winger Solly March.
Palace have been negotiating a permanent deal with Tomiyasu that would bring the Japan international back to the Premier League.
The club are now expected to move forward with the defender’s arrival before the new season begins.
The parties had already reached a general understanding over the terms, leaving Palace head coach Pierre Sage to determine whether the versatile 27-year-old should be signed.
The Eagles are also exploring the possibility of recruiting March following his departure from Brighton at the end of last season.
The 32-year-old winger has been proposed as an option to Palace, and club officials have discussed a potential deal at Selhurst Park.
Sage is expected to deploy a three-man central defence next season, with Tomiyasu regarded as a possible choice for the left-sided role.
Recurring knee problems have disrupted Tomiyasu’s recent career. Although Palace have confidence in the former Arsenal defender’s quality, they want assurances about his physical condition.
After leaving the Gunners by mutual agreement last season, Tomiyasu signed for Ajax and appeared eight times for the Dutch club late in the campaign. He subsequently featured in three World Cup matches for Japan, starting twice.
Palace are seeking to reinforce their defence this summer after first-choice centre-back Maxence Lacroix completed a move to Chelsea.
The club are interested in potentially borrowing Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong, although there is currently no sign that the Stamford Bridge side will allow the 20-year-old to leave.
Palace are also showing significant interest in Brest centre-back Raphael Le Guen.
