A Daily Telegraph investigation, external claims that Uefa provided a severance package to Gianni Infantino’s alleged partner in connection with their reported relationship while he served as the organisation’s general secretary.
A representative for the current Fifa president reportedly said that Infantino firmly rejects the claims and considers them entirely false.
Uefa, where Infantino held the position of general secretary between 2009 and 2016, acknowledged in a statement that the person concerned had received a payment upon leaving the organisation.
The accusations have emerged while Infantino faces uncertainty over his position as Fifa president after abandoning proposals to sell private investors interests in the World Cup.
According to the Telegraph, Uefa paid a six-figure amount to the woman who was alleged to have had a relationship with the married Infantino during his tenure at European football’s governing organisation.
A Fifa representative told the Telegraph that Gianni Infantino completely rejects the accusations, describing them as false and warning that suggestions of misconduct or breaches of rules and statutes are defamatory.
The representative added that no member of staff at either Uefa or Fifa had ever submitted a complaint about Infantino’s conduct, maintaining that no such incident had occurred.
Uefa confirmed that it made a payment to the woman and also funded the completion of her MBA studies at a nearby business school.
The organisation said the payments complied with the rules in force at the time. It added that those policies have since been strengthened to match the standards expected of a modern, prominent organisation.
