Manchester City have reached an agreement to recruit Argentine goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille for £1.7m.
The 34-year-old is returning to Etihad Stadium after spending the 2016-17 campaign there without featuring for the senior side. He has agreed to a two-year contract.
Rulli memorably converted a spot-kick during Villarreal’s triumph over Manchester United in the 2021 Europa League final, then saved David de Gea’s attempt to settle the lengthy penalty shootout.
He has made eight appearances for Argentina and belonged to the squads that lifted the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa America.
The goalkeeper has also represented several European clubs, including Real Sociedad, Montpellier and Ajax.
He arrives following James Trafford’s move to Leeds earlier this week in a transfer that could be worth as much as £45m. Rulli is expected to provide cover for first-choice goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
