Fulham Reach £30m Agreement for Southampton Midfielder Shea Charles

News

Fulham have reached an agreement to sign Southampton midfielder Shea Charles in a transfer valued at up to £30m.

If he successfully completes his medical, the 22-year-old will join the Craven Cottage club on a five-year deal, making him the most expensive Northern Irish footballer in history.

Charles began his career with Manchester City and was also wanted by Leeds United, but he has chosen a move to west London. He is expected to fill the gap left by Sasa Lukic, who joined Ipswich Town last week.

The midfielder will be Fulham’s third addition since Alvaro Arbeloa became their new manager, having served as Real Madrid’s interim coach during the latter half of last season.

Arbeloa replaced Marco Silva after the Portuguese coach departed to manage Benfica. Fulham subsequently recruited two Madrid players, forward Gonzalo Garcia and midfielder Cesar Palacios, before agreeing the deal for Charles.

Fulham will meet German side Stuttgart on Saturday, 15 August, before beginning their Premier League campaign away to London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday, 24 August.
