Algeria, Morocco, Cameroon and Malawi have secured qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
This year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco also serves as a qualifier for next summer’s competition, with every nation reaching the semi-finals earning a World Cup berth.
Algeria advanced to the semi-finals and qualified for the Women’s World Cup for the first time after defeating 10-player Ivory Coast 2-1. Ines Khiri and Amira Ould Braham scored for Algeria after N’Sira Oudraogo was dismissed while Ivory Coast held a 1-0 lead.
Sakina Ouzraoui Diki and Hanane Ait El Haj found the net as Morocco overcame South Africa 2-1 to book their place. Cameroon also progressed with a 1-0 win against Nigeria, decided by a superb 30-yard free-kick from 19-year-old Myriam Nyadjou.
Malawi, ranked 153rd in the world, claimed the final automatic spot by producing a major upset against Ghana. Goals from Temwa Chawinga and Rose Kadzere completed a 2-1 comeback victory.
The semi-finals are scheduled for Wednesday, when Morocco face Cameroon before Algeria take on Malawi.
Quarter-final losers Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and South Africa remain in contention for a place at the World Cup.
Ivory Coast will meet Ghana on Thursday, while Nigeria play South Africa. The two victorious teams will advance to the 10-team intercontinental play-offs, scheduled for November and December.
Three of the 10 teams competing in those play-offs will earn places at next summer’s World Cup, which runs from 24 June to 25 July.
