Thursday’s loss sent Rangers into a Conference League play-off against Czech side Jablonec. The setback followed the devastating confirmation that Youssef Chermiti faces a lengthy spell out with a knee injury, shortly after Rangers turned down a substantial offer for the 22-year-old.
As a result, Rangers must now pursue another forward alongside the wide players and defenders already on McInnes’ recruitment list. He said the club are making every effort to bring in players with the right qualities, with PSV Eindhoven winger Couhaib Driouech expected to become the latest addition.
Halliday believes the squad should not remain so unbalanced at this stage of the transfer window. In his view, Rangers require three central defenders, a left-back and at least two, possibly three, wingers.
He added that the players currently available should still be capable of overcoming Dundee United, Hibs and Jagiellonia Bialystok.
Rangers had hoped that bringing McInnes and Lawrence Shankland together again would deliver success after the pair came close to taking the title from Celtic during their time at Hearts last season.
However, former Rangers forward Steven Thompson believes Shankland is already experiencing the greater expectations that accompany his role as the club’s new captain.
He suggested that the demands of representing Rangers, an unsatisfactory start and the frustration caused by mistakes are all weighing on the striker.
Thompson explained that errors at previous clubs may have attracted only limited criticism, whereas every poor touch, ineffective combination or missed shooting opportunity is quickly challenged at Rangers. He believes Shankland will need time to adjust because the difficulty is psychological rather than physical.
