Sunderland have reached an agreement worth £25.6m to recruit Toulouse left-back Dayann Methalie.
The 20-year-old French defender is set to have a medical after the clubs verbally settled on an upfront payment of £23.9m, plus £1.7m in possible bonuses.
Methalie featured 28 times for Toulouse in Ligue 1 last season and scored twice across his final three matches, helping the club secure a ninth-place finish.
The agreement comes after an extended effort from Regis Le Bris’ team, who are aiming to reinforce their back line before opening their Premier League season away to Ipswich Town next Saturday at 15:00 BST.
The Black Cats are also preparing for their first European campaign in 53 years and want to increase the depth of their squad.
Belgian right-back Thomas Meunier, who joined on a free transfer after leaving Lille, is Sunderland’s only confirmed arrival of the transfer window so far.
