Following his dismissal by Monaco in early June, Pocognoli said the experience had taught him valuable lessons and that he would patiently and resolutely prepare for his next opportunity.
He departed after guiding Monaco to seventh place in his only Ligue 1 campaign, having joined from Union Saint-Gilloise the previous October. He established his coaching credentials at the forward-thinking Belgian side, which, like Hearts, belongs to the Jamestown network.
Once his 17-year playing career as a left-back across the leading divisions of England, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium came to an end, he began coaching USG’s youth players and also worked within Belgium’s national-team structure.
In 2024, he stepped up to manage the senior side, quickly securing the Belgian Super Cup before steering the club to its first league championship since 1935 and mounting a challenge for Champions League qualification.
His adventurous style soon attracted Monaco’s attention.
Pocognoli reportedly prefers an attack-minded 3-4-1-2 formation, built around controlling matches both in and out of possession through aggressive pressing, immediate pressure after losing the ball and assured play when retaining it.
He also views footballers as creative performers who need to feel mentally and physically at ease to produce their best displays.
