Patrick Vieira has taken charge of Senegal’s national team. The former Arsenal captain, who was born in Senegal, had been without a managerial position since departing from Italian club Genoa last November. He succeeds Pape Thiaw, who was removed from his role after Senegal lost to Belgium in the last 32 of this summer’s World Cup.
“Patrick Vieira has been appointed as the new head coach of Senegal’s senior men’s team,” a statement announced. “Details regarding his official unveiling and the next stages of his appointment will be shared in due course. Welcome to Senegal, coach.”
During his playing career, Vieira secured three Premier League championships with Arsenal and helped France win the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 European Championship. Following coaching roles at Nice and New York City, the 50-year-old managed Crystal Palace for two seasons.
The south London club dismissed him in March 2023. He then became head coach of Strasbourg before spending a year in charge of Genoa in Italy.
