Palmer and Joao Pedro have recently been Chelsea’s main sources of attacking danger, and the in-form Rogers has now added another dimension to their forward line.
The move brings him back together with Palmer, his former Manchester City colleague, whom he called his closest friend in football after the victory at Craven Cottage.
Discussing Palmer’s performance, Rogers said his team-mate endured a challenging campaign because of injuries but returned for pre-season determined to silence his doubters.
Rogers added that Palmer was comfortably the outstanding player on the field and expressed his delight at having him in the same team.
Rogers’ fitness and strength were equally promising, particularly because England’s journey to third place at the World Cup had limited his pre-season preparations.
He became Chelsea’s first player since Christopher Nkunku in 2023 to score on his Premier League debut. He also created five opportunities, the highest total by a player making his first league appearance for the club since records started in 2003-04.
Chelsea’s travelling supporters also performed their new song for Rogers for the first time.
Joao Pedro, like Palmer, did not feature at the World Cup after being surprisingly omitted from Brazil’s squad. He responded strongly during pre-season by scoring eight times in seven matches.
His early Premier League goal was therefore expected. The Brazilian recently agreed a contract extension and took over the number nine shirt from Liam Delap, who was not included in Monday’s squad.
Alonso praised the excellent understanding and technical ability displayed by his attacking trio.
He explained that Joao Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer can produce exceptional moments when they receive the ball in dangerous areas, adding that he was delighted to see all three forwards score.
Alonso also stressed the importance of placing them in situations where they can perform at their best and praised each player for contributing to the team’s overall effort.
