Supporters made their frustration clear at Parkhead on Saturday following Celtic’s disastrous Champions League play-off defeat to LASK, displaying a banner that read ‘World Class Embarrassment’. Despite that message, the atmosphere was largely encouraging rather than hostile, which caught O’Neill off guard.
Two goals from Camilo Duran helped Celtic overcome Falkirk, although Colby Donovan’s own goal created a tense final 20 minutes. The performance lacked polish, but securing the victory was vital.
“When we stepped off the bus, the supporters applauded us. I did not expect that, and we probably had not earned such a reception, so I was delighted,” O’Neill said.
Luke McCowan, who had faced heavy criticism online after his display in Linz, received warm applause when he came off the bench against Falkirk.
“The supporters were excellent today,” former Celtic captain Scott Brown said.
“I especially appreciated their reaction when McCowan entered the match. Those are the genuine supporters—the people attending games rather than hiding behind keyboards.
“The online abuse is unacceptable. Luke has reportedly had to remove his social media accounts, and nobody should be forced into that. Football naturally involves both strong and disappointing performances.
“He will undoubtedly be disappointed, but returning and continuing with his work requires real resilience. Luke performed well after coming on. He cares deeply about Celtic and is always determined to give everything for the club.”
