Sunday’s stalemate concluded a difficult eight-day spell for Everton.
The turbulent period started during the previous weekend’s 1-1 draw against Bournemouth, when reports emerged that Everton had agreed to sell highly regarded prospect Harrison Armstrong to Nottingham Forest.
Following an angry reaction from the travelling fans, the club’s board, headed by chairman Dan Friedkin, called off the midfielder’s transfer.
However, retaining Armstrong left Everton needing to generate money through other departures before Tuesday’s deadline.
As a result, the club approved Iliman N’Diaye’s move to Manchester City in a deal potentially worth £65m, while striker Beto and right-back Nathan Patterson also left.
Kinnear was unable to secure sufficient reinforcements after a proposed move for Monaco forward Folarin Balogun fell through, leaving Moyes with just 18 senior outfield players until at least January.
The limited squad depth is likely to be most noticeable in attack, where Everton must now depend heavily on the inconsistent finishing of Thierno Barry.
The French forward, Everton’s leading scorer across all competitions this season, struggled to become involved for long periods against United.
Barry headed Merlin Rohl’s delivery over the bar late in the first half, increasing his tally of missed major opportunities in the league this season to four.
Former England and Everton striker Wayne Rooney described Barry’s display as the kind supporters have become familiar with, showing promise but also causing frustration.
Rooney suggested the forward can be careless when given time in possession and felt he might have made more of his only clear opportunity.
He added that although Barry has begun the campaign positively, this was a fairly characteristic performance from him.
