However, matters at West Ham are rarely that simple.
Questions still surround Amanda Staveley’s plans. Her agreement with former co-chair Vanessa Gold in July activated West Ham’s pre-emption rights procedure. The outcome allowed Kretinsky and Sullivan to expand their holdings, while fellow investors Tripp Smith and Terry Brown also increased their shares.
In principle, Staveley could gain control of more than half of the club if she reached agreements with Sullivan and Smith, whose stake will stand at 11%.
Any such arrangement, though, would also have to go through the pre-emption rights process.
In private, Sullivan speaks favourably about Kretinsky and is frustrated that the recent negotiations distracted attention from the transfer window. His comments do not suggest that he intends to cause further disruption at the London Stadium.
Nevertheless, some supporters remain cautious.
“When Sullivan stepped down, it appeared that he was preparing to leave, but that has not happened,” said Simon Lane, a West Ham season-ticket holder from north Wales, speaking 90 minutes before kick-off.
“Nobody is entirely sure how to interpret the situation. Is he looking to acquire additional shares, or does he want to leave? And why would he strike an agreement with Kretinsky before selling the entire club?
“It is hard to decide which outcome would be best. Some supporters admire what Amanda Staveley achieved at Newcastle, but Kretinsky appoints capable people, while Karim is communicating with the fans, which is something we have long wanted.
“Even so, I feel positive about the season ahead.”
With players such as Bowen and Engels, West Ham possess a level of quality that few Championship opponents can equal.
Nuno understands, however, that individual talent alone is not enough to build a successful club.
West Ham have rarely been associated with stability or togetherness in recent seasons, but Nuno believes there is a clear route towards a more promising future.
“I hope things improve,” he said. “Everyone, from the owners and staff to the players and supporters, believes that we are working towards progress and better times.
“What I notice and sense is cooperation throughout every part of the club. Five thousand supporters came on a Tuesday evening. The events of the past must stay behind us. Remaining united is essential because there is no alternative.”
