Spanish second-tier club Eldense have announced that Argentine legend Lionel Messi has entered into an initial agreement to become their majority shareholder.
This would be Messi’s second investment in a Spanish football club, following his purchase of Catalan team Cornella in April.
The 39-year-old former Barcelona attacker currently represents Inter Miami and recently ended his international career after Argentina suffered a 1-0 defeat by Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.
Eldense said: “Lionel Messi has reached an initial agreement to acquire the shares currently held by Grupo TH Soluciones, a deal that would make him the club’s majority shareholder.
“The proposed transaction remains dependent on the completion of outstanding legal and contractual formalities, including due diligence and approval from Spain’s National Sports Council (CSD).”
The Alicante-based club have collected two points from their opening four matches of the season. They are 20th in La Liga 2 and separated from head coach Claudio Barragan earlier this week.
Cornella compete in the fifth level of Spanish football. When announcing Messi’s investment in April, the club said the move highlighted his strong connection with Barcelona and his dedication to supporting sport and emerging local talent across Catalonia.
Messi moved from Argentina to Spain at the age of 13 before making his senior Barcelona debut as a 17-year-old in October 2004.
He later established a club record by scoring 672 goals in 778 appearances. After leaving Barcelona, he joined Paris St-Germain in 2021 and then moved to Major League Soccer club Inter Miami in the United States in 2023.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi’s former rival at Real Madrid and now an Al-Nassr player in the Saudi Pro League, acquired a 25% share in Spanish club Almeria in February.
