Republic of Ireland Captain Nathan Collins Doubtful for Nations League Due to Calf Injury

News

Republic of Ireland skipper Nathan Collins could miss the opening matches of the forthcoming Nations League campaign due to a calf problem.

The defender sustained the injury during Brentford’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Sunderland last weekend and was unable to finish the match.

Speaking ahead of the fixture against Bournemouth, Brentford manager Keith Andrews confirmed that the centre-back would be unavailable for a period of time.

Asked about the 40-cap international, Andrews said: “No, he will not feature before the international break. Sadly, he has suffered a calf injury.”

“He may have noticed the issue earlier in the match but attempted to continue, which is typical of his commitment and his role as one of the team’s leaders and captains.

“Unfortunately, that means he will not be available.”

Heimir Hallgrimsson’s team begin their Group B3 schedule away against Kosovo on Thursday, 24 September, followed by a meeting with Israel three days later.

Ireland will then welcome Austria to the Aviva Stadium on Thursday, 1 October, before ending the extended international window with another match against Israel at a neutral ground on Sunday, 4 October.
