Uganda have a further connection to Scotland through Laryea Kingston, the former Hearts and Ghana midfielder who now coaches the country’s under-20 side.
Kingston believes the Fisher brothers could soon achieve a historic first.
“Coach Kingston told us that we could become the first white players to represent Uganda, so we would be creating history,” Seb said. “That means a great deal to us.”
Olly agreed, saying: “Nobody has achieved it before, which makes the opportunity incredibly meaningful.”
The brothers are developing a stronger bond with the African country after growing up listening to their grandparents’ memories of Uganda.
Despite practising in intensely hot weather, both players are making the most of the experience.
“The welcome has been fantastic and everyone has treated us extremely well,” Seb said. “Our new team-mates have been very friendly. A few of them are even from the area where my mother was born, so we had plenty to discuss.”
The brothers will shortly head back to Scotland, where they will balance training and matches with Thistle alongside their university and school commitments. However, they intend to reunite with their international colleagues soon.
Olly is aiming to join the squad should Uganda secure a place at the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations early next year, while Seb may feature at the Under-17 World Cup in Qatar in November.
“Playing in an international setup is exactly what every footballer hopes for,” Seb said. “It helps you improve, and I am confident this experience will make both of us stronger players when we return to represent Thistle in Scotland.”
