Aston Villa: Taylor Harwood-Bellis Has Opportunity to Shine at Villa

News

Emery was unable to include Harwood-Bellis in his European squad, with young forward Brian Madjo and defender Modou Cisse also missing out.

A similar situation arose last season with Donyell Malen and Andres Garcia. Malen later joined Roma in January in search of more regular playing time and greater responsibility.

Emery is relying on the versatility of Lamare Bogarde and Boubacar Kamara to provide defensive cover if necessary, although that is unlikely to ease Harwood-Bellis’s disappointment.

“European competitions allow us to register only 23 players, unlike the domestic league,” Emery explained. “[Mikel] Arteta wanted the limit expanded so more players could be included. We had to leave somebody out, and Taylor was the one selected.

“It was a difficult choice for us and for the players. We faced the same challenge previously with Malen and Andres. Our decision was based on a careful assessment of what we expect between now and January.

“We have eight matches to play. Cisse was not selected because he is injured, while Madjo is expected to remain unavailable for at least another two weeks. Taylor was the final arrival, and we believe Bogarde can help maintain the balance, with Kamara also capable of playing in defence.

“We considered the situation very carefully. Taylor is part of our long-term plans, and we hope he will get the chance to represent us in Europe, possibly from January and throughout the coming years.”
