The young player entered City’s academy at under-nine level and began attracting significant attention during the previous campaign.
Samba registered 24 goals and 10 assists in an impressive first complete season with the under-18 team. His highlights included a superb curling free-kick that helped City defeat local rivals Manchester United in the FA Youth Cup final in May.
Samba completed all 90 minutes on his debut and made the most of the chance he was given.
As City found it difficult to create opportunities, Samba opened the scoring with a clever headed flick. He marked the goal by blowing a kiss towards his family and friends in the crowd, then added a fine curling finish later in the match.
Near the end of the contest, Samba received warm applause after being deservedly selected as the player of the match.
Manager Maresca said he was pleased with both the goals and the youngster’s overall display.
Maresca explained that, after deciding to deploy Samba as a number nine, he learned the player had never previously featured in that role. Although he is not a natural striker, the youngster adapted well.
The manager praised Samba’s youth, energy, strength, finishing and ability to create chances for teammates. He also highlighted several smart first-half decisions, while stressing the importance of managing the development of young players patiently.
Maresca added that he hoped to provide Samba with further opportunities.
