On the field, 29-year-old central midfielder Scott Martin, now one of the more experienced members of the squad, has been encouraged by the promising young Scottish players developing around him.
Martin highlighted Aiden McCallion, a central midfielder on a co-operation loan from Rangers, as one of those making a strong impression. He said the youngster has worked hard and looked composed in possession since arriving. He also praised fellow Rangers loanee Lewis Stewart for his exceptional pace.
He explained that players at Rangers are likely accustomed to controlling possession and having more time on the ball, whereas Championship football is faster, more intense and frequently moves from one end of the pitch to the other.
Martin believes the experience will benefit the young players by exposing them to aspects of senior football they may not encounter with a B team or at under-19 or under-20 level. He added that both players have adapted exceptionally well.
Queen’s Park enjoyed a positive League Cup group campaign, but their opening Championship fixtures have proved more difficult, leaving them second from bottom in the standings.
Despite their position, Martin remains confident that the team has enough quality to preserve its Championship status. Their next challenge is a home match against Ayr United, who sit one place and one point ahead of them.
Speaking before Friday’s televised fixture, Martin stressed that every team in the division is capable of defeating any opponent.
He identified the goalless draw at Partick Thistle as a significant moment in their campaign. Earning a point at what he considers the Championship’s most difficult away ground gave the squad renewed confidence.
Assessing the season so far, Martin said the team remains in a reasonable position. They have produced impressive spells in several matches but must combine those performances and show greater consistency.
He acknowledged that the squad’s relative youth can occasionally make matters challenging, although he feels they are close to becoming a strong side once again.
