Manchester City remained at the Premier League summit with a perfect five wins from five after defeating Sunderland 5-3 in a thrilling eight-goal encounter.
Antoine Semenyo struck twice, scoring on either side of the interval, while Enzo Fernández, Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland also found the net for City. Sunderland nevertheless caused the hosts plenty of problems throughout the match.
Brian Brobbey completed a hat-trick for the visitors, becoming the first Sunderland player since Jermain Defoe in 2016 to score three times in a Premier League fixture. His goals helped the away side equalise at 1-1 and 2-2 before they later narrowed City’s advantage to 4-3.
Rúben Dias protected City’s second-half lead with a spectacular acrobatic clearance on the goal line. Haaland then scored against Sunderland for the first time in his career to complete the 5-3 victory and end the visitors’ hopes of earning a memorable result at the Etihad Stadium.
