Brian Brobbey made Premier League history on Sunday by registering a hat-trick despite finishing the match on the losing team.
The Dutch striker became only the fifth player to accomplish this in a Premier League fixture, scoring all three of his goals as Sunderland fell 5-3 to Manchester City.
It marked the first such occurrence in the top division since 2007 and only the sixth since the Premier League began in 1992.
Roque Santa Cruz was the previous player to record this unusual achievement, netting three goals for Blackburn Rovers in their 5-3 loss to Wigan Athletic in December 2007.
Each of the other four examples happened before the turn of the millennium.
Dwight Yorke struck three times for Aston Villa in September 1996, although his team suffered a 4-3 defeat at Newcastle.
In December 1995, Dion Dublin also scored a treble for Coventry City as they lost 4-3 away to Sheffield Wednesday.
Former Southampton attacker Matt Le Tissier, meanwhile, holds the unwanted distinction of scoring hat-tricks in two separate Premier League defeats.
He first did so in the league’s opening season, when Southampton lost 4-3 at Oldham Athletic in May 1993, before repeating it in a 4-3 home defeat against Nottingham Forest in August 1995.
