Egan featured 208 times for Sheffield United across six seasons, helping the club secure promotion to the Premier League in both 2019 and 2023.
He was appointed club captain in the summer of 2023, but an Achilles injury brought his top-flight comeback to an early end. His final appearance for the Blades came that September, and he remained sidelined for nearly 10 months.
When his contract expired the following summer, Sheffield United chose not to extend it. The decision left Egan disappointed and without a club as he continued recovering from the serious injury and worked to revive his career.
After trial spells with Burnley and West Ham, the experienced centre-back impressed Burnley manager Scott Parker enough to earn a one-year contract. The recently relegated club were aiming for an immediate return to the top division.
Burnley began their Championship campaign strongly, but Egan was still rebuilding his fitness and made only seven appearances. Five months later, he left the promotion challenge at Turf Moor to join Hull’s fight against relegation.
He agreed an 18-month contract and was immediately placed in the starting lineup. In February, he completed a full match for the first time in more than a year, coincidentally facing Burnley in a 2-0 defeat.
The Kerry-born defender added another 10 appearances as Hull avoided relegation on goal difference on the final day of the season.
Sergej Jakirovic subsequently took charge and reshaped the team during the following campaign, with a fully recovered Egan becoming an important part of Hull’s progress.
He appeared 48 times as Hull narrowly claimed a play-off place before defeating Middlesbrough in the final to reach the Premier League for the first time since 2017.
Egan carried his impressive form into the new top-flight season, producing a commanding display in Hull’s opening-day 2-0 win over Manchester United.
He recorded 18 clearances against Manchester United and later helped the Tigers keep clean sheets against Coventry and Aston Villa. Hull then collected a point against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge before suffering a narrow defeat to Newcastle.
The return to the Premier League has gone remarkably well for both Hull and Egan, with the team demonstrating that it is ready for the challenge of avoiding relegation.
