Nations League: Why Do Players Pull Out of International Squads?

News

Five England players pulled out of the squad because of injuries on Monday ahead of the upcoming Nations League fixtures. Declan Rice, Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento all withdrew from the group.

Outside major tournaments, there is no official procedure for leaving an international squad.

The Football Association generally permits a player to withdraw from an England squad after discussions between the medical teams of the player’s club and the national side. Both parties also frequently conduct medical examinations.

If an association has concerns about a player’s condition following a withdrawal request, Fifa rules allow it to ask for an independent medical assessment.

In exceptional circumstances, national associations may lodge a complaint with Fifa if they believe a club or player has made an unjustified request to withdraw from the squad.

Other football associations are thought to follow comparable procedures, although no universal system exists.

Major competitions such as the World Cup and European Championship, however, operate under much stricter rules.

A player seeking to leave a final tournament squad because of injury must provide suitable medical evidence, which needs to be approved before the withdrawal is accepted.

There is likewise no official procedure for bringing new players into a squad once the original selection has been confirmed.

Major tournaments use a more structured replacement process, usually with a deadline before a team’s opening game for outfield players. Goalkeepers face fewer limitations because of the specialised nature of their role.

Uefa does not impose specific rules on players leaving national squads outside the final stages of major competitions. Each country’s football association is responsible for deciding and applying its own procedures.

In the Nations League, Uefa only requires each country to register a 23-player matchday squad by 23:59 Central European Time on the day before the fixture.

At least three of the selected players must be goalkeepers.

For the Nations League finals, each team must name a 26-player squad.
