Thomas Tuchel has raised serious questions about Cole Palmer’s future with England after appearing to doubt the Chelsea forward’s desire to represent the national team.
The England manager spoke bluntly about Palmer’s latest absence from international duty, pointing out that the 24-year-old has already missed numerous chances to feature for his country. Palmer, who has earned 14 caps, withdrew from this week’s squad because of a minor muscle problem. His absence was particularly disappointing after he missed out on Tuchel’s World Cup selection following difficulties with fitness and form last season.
Tuchel places significant importance on unity and expects complete dedication from his players. He has had few opportunities to work with Palmer, despite recalling him following an impressive opening to the season. When asked whether the former Manchester City player appeared fully committed to England, Tuchel acknowledged that the concern was difficult to dismiss.
The manager then delivered a clear message to Palmer, noting that he has been unavailable for too many international camps. Tuchel said several invitations had been extended to the attacker, but he could not attend this gathering. He added that his immediate focus would remain on the players currently with the squad.
Tuchel described Palmer’s absence as another lost chance but stopped short of blaming him. He said injuries had kept the forward away from too many camps and explained that he could judge players only by what he observed while working with them in the national-team environment.
Tuchel also rejected the possibility of inviting Palmer merely to spend time with the group. He explained that bringing in an injured player would place additional demands on the medical staff and insisted that all available resources should be directed towards those preparing to play.
England begin their Nations League campaign against Spain at Wembley on Saturday evening, and Tuchel has several options in Palmer’s position. Morgan Gibbs-White cut short a holiday in Dubai after being selected as his replacement.
Tuchel highlighted Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze as his available choices. He praised their enthusiasm, fitness and readiness to contribute, while specifically noting Gibbs-White’s willingness to leave his holiday after only one day.
Palmer had appeared in each of Chelsea’s Premier League fixtures this season before withdrawing, but he was not the only player ruled out. Tuchel expressed no concern about Tino Livramento, who was absent for Newcastle’s victory over Hull. He also accepted the situations involving Manchester United pair Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford. Declan Rice was similarly excused after carrying an injury during the World Cup and coping with a demanding schedule.
Tuchel stressed that every player’s circumstances must be assessed separately. He said Rice had contacted him with an explanation and that signs of a problem were already visible during Arsenal’s match against Brighton. The manager added that he was aware Rashford and Mainoo had also been playing despite physical discomfort.
England enter the meeting with the reigning world champions determined to respond to the frustration of their World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina. Although questions have been raised about the identity of English football, Rogers believes Tuchel’s team can retain possession and control matches after taking a lead. The defeat by Argentina, however, remains painful.
The Chelsea attacker said England possess the ability to manage such situations, while acknowledging that very few teams can do so under the pressure of a World Cup semi-final. Having been on the field, he recalled how the team concentrated so heavily on preventing an equaliser that their thinking occasionally became too cautious.
Rogers said the players must remain calm and composed when facing similar circumstances. Despite the heartbreak, he hopes the experience will help the squad in future matches by reminding them of the emotions they felt at the final whistle and throughout the difficult closing half-hour against Argentina.
Rogers also admitted that England’s other attacking players must reduce the team’s dependence on Harry Kane and Bellingham for goals. He said neither player would be available forever and that others must be prepared to assume greater responsibility, beginning with the new international cycle.
Tuchel must also decide who starts at right-back, where Jarell Quansah is challenging Trent Alexander-Arnold. In midfield, uncapped Alex Scott is hoping to be selected ahead of Myles Lewis-Skelly and James Garner.
