Women’s Super League: Breaking Down Man Utd’s Strategy Under New Manager Eva Olid

Introducing a different playing philosophy requires patience, especially when the team must occupy unfamiliar areas and take risks beyond their usual comfort zone.

Coaches with bold tactical ideas can sometimes become overly focused on the finished system rather than adapting to the immediate requirements of their squad.

Olid, however, seems determined to avoid making that mistake.

“Our priority against Arsenal was maintaining a solid defensive shape,” she explained. “We are working to strengthen the players’ belief.”

A more flexible and adventurous attacking approach may remain the long-term ambition, but Olid appears prepared to develop it gradually.

She displayed the same adaptability during the opening stages of her time in charge of Hearts, earning valuable results and the confidence of her squad while laying the foundations for entertaining football.

“The attacking side will develop,” Olid said. “First, we must preserve this defensive organisation. From that base, we can steadily become more adventurous, produce opportunities and score more often.”

Their League Cup success offered encouraging signs of attacking progress, even though Sheffield United currently sit at the foot of WSL 2 during the opening weeks of the campaign.

The next important test will be whether they can carry that momentum into Sunday’s WSL fixture against West Ham.
