Arsenal head to Stamford Bridge for their Women’s Super League clash with Chelsea aware that losing to their rivals would be a major setback only four weeks into the campaign.
That may sound like a harsh judgment, but the Gunners understand from experience how difficult it is to recover after losing ground early in the WSL title battle.
Renee Slegers’ team already trail leaders Manchester City by seven points, despite having a match in hand, and cannot afford to let the gap grow any wider.
Back-to-back draws with Crystal Palace and Manchester United have disrupted Arsenal’s opening weeks of the season.
Poor starts have undermined their title challenges in recent years, with the club now waiting seven years to claim another WSL crown.
During that period, Arsenal have won the Women’s Champions League and the Women’s Champions Cup, showing that their squad has the ability to secure major honours.
However, familiar problems have returned in 2026-27, as wasteful finishing and a lack of composure in front of goal have already cost them valuable points.
They meet perennial champions Chelsea on Sunday at 16:30 BST, fully aware that they must turn their performance into a positive result.
“Looking at our previous two matches, we controlled large periods but failed to convert that superiority into goals and victories, so it is an area we must address,” Slegers said.
“We have confidence in the squad’s ability and understanding. There are many different ways for us to create opportunities, and once everything comes together, we can become extremely effective.
“The key is improving the small details in attacking areas.”
