Chris Smalling: Porto Secure Former Manchester United and England Defender

News

Former Manchester United and England centre-back Chris Smalling has joined Portuguese league leaders Porto.

The defender had been a free agent since departing Saudi Pro League club Al-Fayha during the summer.

The 36-year-old had been linked with Rangers, although the proposed transfer never came to fruition.

Smalling has agreed a deal with Porto that runs until the end of the season and includes an option to extend it for another year.

Porto have made a perfect start to their domestic campaign, winning all seven matches and opening up a five-point lead over second-placed Benfica.

However, Francesco Farioli’s team suffered a home defeat against Manchester City in their first Champions League fixture.

The move allows Smalling to continue a 19-year senior career that started with non-league Maidstone. He later represented Fulham, Manchester United and Roma. During that time, he collected five major honours with Manchester United, including two Premier League titles, before winning the Uefa Conference League with Jose Mourinho’s Roma in 2022.

Smalling also made 31 appearances for the England national team.
