Nations League: How Much Are Clubs Paid for Their Players?

News

Uefa says 611 clubs are expected to receive funding during the current payment cycle.

That figure could exceed 900 once the entire Euro 2028 tournament is taken into account, matching the level recorded for the 2024 competition.

Clubs receive a fixed payment of £3,285 for every player included in a matchday squad for a Nations League or Euro 2028 qualifier. The amount is 5% higher than the equivalent fee paid during the 2020-24 cycle.

Uefa figures indicate that RB Leipzig are likely to collect the largest amount from the 2024-25 Nations League, receiving £302,000 after making 16 players available for the competition.

The final financial benefit for each Premier League club during the current international window cannot be confirmed until every Nations League and Euro 2028 qualifying fixture has finished. However, the number of players released for the 2026-27 Nations League offers an approximate indication, excluding those currently on loan:

A call-up alone does not secure compensation, as a player must also be included on the official team sheet before their club becomes eligible for payment.

Many Premier League teams also have players involved in international competitions outside the Nations League, where separate compensation arrangements may apply, along with others selected for under-21 fixtures.

Although releasing several players for international duty can generate significant income, clubs with fewer representatives may gain an advantage by giving those who remain extra time to recover and train.
