Pocognoli has instructed him to make a greater impact further forward.

“I’m pleased that he sees me playing in a more attacking position,” Gilmour said.

“Whenever he gives me a role, I’ll give everything I have, whether that’s at the back or in attack. Above all, I’m delighted to be getting time on the pitch.”

“I understand that when I don’t have possession, I can’t influence the match as much as I’d like.”

Gilmour created the opening goal for Sassuolo forward Kieron Bowie, helping Pocognoli secure his first win in charge with a 2-0 victory in North Macedonia on Saturday.

“As a team, we’ve become more assertive and proactive, moving the ball between the lines and producing plenty of opportunities, even though we haven’t converted as many as we wanted,” he said when discussing the tactical changes introduced by the new coaching staff.

“The important thing is that we’re making chances. The supporters are enjoying it, and we love playing this way too.”

“It’s obviously only the beginning and progress will require time, but things have gone well up to this point.”

Gilmour can now aspire to emulate captain Andy Robertson’s remarkable milestone after the defender collected his 100th international appearance in Skopje.

Despite his modest nature, Gilmour already considers himself one of the more senior squad members and is ready to guide the young players introduced by the new head coach.

“I was the youngest player when I first joined the squad,” Gilmour remembered. “Steve Clarke gave me that opportunity, and I’ll always appreciate the faith he showed in me.”

“There is a lot of quality in this group, along with several newcomers. The experienced members will support the younger players, although we must remain patient while everyone adjusts. So far, we’re adapting well.”

Pocognoli has clearly recognised Gilmour’s importance, selecting him in the starting line-up for all three matches.

“Our approach suits his style because he plays a crucial part in linking the defence with teammates further up the field,” the Belgian coach said.

“He had only recently begun receiving some playing time with Napoli before joining the squad, but I hope this experience helps him advance further at club level.”

Slovenia coach Bostjan Cesar also rates Gilmour highly and understands the challenge the influential Scotland midfielder presents to his team.

“Billy Gilmour is an excellent player competing in Italy’s highest division, and he enjoyed a strong campaign in which he drove his team from midfield,” Cesar said.

“We’ll do everything possible to compete with his technical quality.”
