Nations League 2026-27 Explained: Promotion, Relegation, Knockout Rounds and Euro 2028 Qualification

News

England have enjoyed a strong League A campaign so far, but Wales have faced a more difficult path.

Drawn in a challenging group alongside Portugal, Denmark and Norway, Wales have earned three points from four matches, with their only victory coming in a 2-1 home win over Norway.

Portugal have already secured a place in the quarter-finals, leaving Wales needing almost maximum points from their remaining games against Norway and Portugal to retain any realistic hope of reaching the last eight.

Finishing third would send Wales into a relegation play-off in March, whereas ending the group in last place would result in automatic relegation to League B.

Scotland, like England, still have three fixtures to play and will host Slovenia at Hampden Park on Tuesday.

Before that match, Scotland occupy third place in League B1, trailing Slovenia only on goal difference. Victory for Sebastien Pocognoli’s team would lift them into second behind Switzerland before the November break.

Scotland’s second-to-last fixture is against bottom-placed North Macedonia, so victories in their next two matches would put them on the verge of securing a top-two finish before their final game against Switzerland, who are widely expected to claim automatic promotion.

Northern Ireland have enjoyed an impressive international window, recording two victories and two draws without conceding a goal across their four Group B2 matches.

They lead the group by one point, with games against bottom-placed Georgia and second-placed Hungary still to come.

If Northern Ireland defeat Georgia and Hungary do not overcome Ukraine in the opening round of November fixtures, first place and promotion will be secured. If both Northern Ireland and Hungary win, their final-round meeting will decide which team earns promotion.

The Republic of Ireland sit third in Group B3 after collecting five points from their opening four matches.

Their final two games are against group leaders Austria and second-placed Kosovo. Winning both would ensure a top-two finish and could also give them an excellent chance of taking first place, depending on goal difference and the outcome of Austria’s match against Israel.
