Harry Kane: From Childhood Goalkeeper to England Striking Legend

News

Kane joined League One club Leyton Orient on loan and made his senior debut against Rochdale in January 2011, replacing experienced forward Scott McGleish. He went on to score five goals from nine starts.

McGleish: “Harry was different from some Premier League players who arrive with a big ego. He was eager to gain experience and understand what I describe as men’s football.”

“From the beginning, he was prepared to compete for his position. He kept his head down during training and worked extremely hard.”

“His quality and ambition were clear in training and later in matches. However, he still looked like a typical 17-year-old: slim, not especially fast and in need of greater physical strength, but technically outstanding.”

Following several senior appearances for Spurs, he joined Championship strugglers Millwall on loan in January 2012. Kane scored nine goals and played an important role in helping Kenny Jackett’s team avoid relegation.

Former Millwall defender Alan Dunne: “I have watched many players arrive at the Den and become overwhelmed. Within five minutes, the crowd can subject them to abuse they have never experienced, and some are unable to handle the pressure.”

“Harry was not intimidated by it. He remained focused and trusted his own ability.”

Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood: “I regularly watched Harry play for Millwall, where the atmosphere could be extremely intimidating. I once heard one of our scouts tell Harry Redknapp, Tottenham’s manager at the time, that Kane needed to leave Millwall because the environment was not helping him.”

“I immediately stepped in and said it was exactly the kind of setting he needed.”

After making his Premier League debut for Tottenham in August 2012, Kane left on another loan. Injury restricted the 19-year-old to three top-flight appearances for Norwich, before he moved temporarily to Leicester, where both he and future England colleague Jamie Vardy found regular starting opportunities difficult to secure.
