Lazio joined Inter at the Serie A summit on points after defeating Monza 3-1 on Sunday, while 10-player Roma were held by Como in the Italian league’s first scoreless draw of the campaign.
Gennaro Gattuso’s Lazio maintained their impressive early-season form following his unsuccessful spell in charge of Italy, who failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The unbeaten capital club claimed a fifth win in six games, moving onto 16 points alongside Inter after their rivals secured a 3-0 home victory against Parma on Saturday.
Nuno Tavares put Lazio ahead after only three minutes, before Gustav Isaksen added a second midway through the opening half. Monza were reduced to 10 men in the 35th minute when Lorenzo Lucchesi brought down Tijjani Noslin as he raced towards goal. Despite that setback, the visitors, who sit 16th, unsettled Lazio after half-time by cutting the deficit and nearly finding an equaliser. Lazio eventually sealed the result with a late third goal.
Roma had to settle for one point at Como after Donyell Malen, the league’s leading scorer, was dismissed for a dangerous challenge early in the second half. Playing with 10 men forced Roma to adopt a more cautious approach, and neither side was able to score. The result left Inter and Lazio two points ahead of Roma following their respective victories over Parma and Monza.
“The frustrating part was having to play around two-thirds of the game with one fewer player,” Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini told DAZN. “We believed we had a very good opportunity to win, but the red card meant we had to defend with 10 men. We remained organised and composed, so earning a draw after spending 30 minutes short-handed is an acceptable outcome.”
Bologna recorded their first victory of the campaign with a 2-1 win against Lecce. Milan were scheduled to visit Sassuolo later, while in-form Cagliari were set to host Juventus at the Unipol Domus in the final match of the day.
Borussia Mönchengladbach stayed at the bottom of the Bundesliga standings following Sunday’s 2-1 loss to nearby rivals Cologne, with crowd disturbances overshadowing the contest.
Play was halted for several minutes as riot officers gathered around the visiting supporters’ section after Gladbach fans appeared to launch fireworks towards the home stands following Said El Mala’s excellent second-half winning goal. The defeat extended Gladbach’s disastrous start, leaving them without a point after five matches, while newly appointed coach Alexander Blessin was unable to stop their losing run.
