Manchester United have made their poorest start to a league campaign in four decades, but Michael Carrick says he is embracing the challenge. United travelled to Madrid without Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw after both suffered minor injuries during the weekend draw with Tottenham. Although Carrick acknowledged that his team are going through a difficult period, he promised they would respond with determination.
United have earned only six Premier League points so far, yet Carrick maintained that he does not feel under pressure. He also supported captain Bruno Fernandes, revealing that the midfielder had been dealing with a physical problem and expressing confidence that he would soon return to his best. Carrick stressed that progress takes time, noting that champions Arsenal finished around seventh or eighth during Mikel Arteta’s first two seasons.
“Achieving something meaningful or exceptional requires you to overcome difficult moments,” Carrick said before his team’s Champions League league-phase match against Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday.
“We wanted and expected much better results, but this is our current position,” Carrick added. “After winning so many matches last season, I knew the situation would eventually become more demanding. When results are poor, people quickly describe everything as a disaster and call for major changes. I understand that reaction, but it is not how I or the team think. Difficulties have to be confronted and overcome, just as I did throughout my playing career. We must recognise our present circumstances while remembering that we are still developing.”
Addressing the scrutiny surrounding him, Carrick said: “It depends on what you mean by pressure. We set high standards for ourselves because we understand what we want to achieve and what we are capable of. That motivation comes from within, so external opinions do not make me feel pressured.”
“I am quite good at blocking out outside noise and staying within my own environment. The group takes a similar approach. We support one another, remain aware of what is being said and concentrate on the things we can influence. Our motivation comes from wanting to succeed and win, not from negativity. Matches can be decided by very small margins, but we have tremendous belief in ourselves and each other. I fully trust these players to win many games.”
“That belief comes from knowing the players, understanding how deeply they care and seeing the strength of the squad. We are here to challenge ourselves, and that is the opportunity now facing us. If you cannot appreciate a demanding situation, search deeply for solutions and embrace the challenge when circumstances become chaotic, then this is not the right club for you.”
United’s disappointing domestic run also included elimination from the Carabao Cup by Brighton at Old Trafford. However, Carrick’s team produced an emphatic victory over Sabah in their opening Champions League fixture last month.
“We must respond immediately while accepting the situation as it stands,” Carrick said. “I enjoy this aspect of the challenge because difficult periods reveal who is truly committed. You discover which people within the team, squad and club want to remain for the long term and genuinely care about what happens. The supporters know what they expect and are desperate to see progress, so we must give them something in return. We need to welcome the challenge, and I firmly believe we will overcome it.”
When asked whether Fernandes could regain his best form, Carrick replied: “The answer is clearly yes. Bruno is an outstanding player. Sometimes performances and results do not fall your way, but he has already achieved remarkable things for this club and will do so again. There has been considerable discussion about his physical condition, and he had been managing an issue.”
“People may not always understand how frequently footballers compete while carrying physical problems. I probably played about 80% of my matches with some kind of issue. It is not ideal, but it can often be managed. Bruno remained available to play, which demonstrates his commitment. He has nearly recovered, the problem is not serious and he is in good condition. He also looked sharp in training this morning and is excited about the match.”
