Ryan told the court it had been “the most important match in the club’s history” and that he was celebrating the “remarkable” goal.
Describing the celebration, he said: “Everybody was jumping around, and you simply moved with the crowd.”
“I’m not sure whether I collided with someone or lost my footing, but I ended up falling down the steps.
“I couldn’t halt my fall. My leg struck the wall, and I began tipping over.
“When I reached out with my arm, I started rolling. There was nothing available to grab.”
The court was told that injuries to Ryan’s arm and leg prevented him from working for a period of time.
Prosecutors said two other men entered the roof area at about the same time as Ryan, although they were prevented from proceeding any farther.
The prosecutor asked why Ryan had headed toward the roof during the celebrations and suggested that his actions had been deliberate.
Ryan replied: “No, that is not what happened.
“All I remember is finding myself going down the steps without being able to stop.
“My momentum caused me to tumble forward.”
Ryan initially faced trial on two charges of assault by beating, but one of those charges was later withdrawn.
The trial remains ongoing.
