Roy Keane Slams ‘Circus-Like’ Man Utd in Lisandro Martinez Critique

News

Former Manchester United skipper Roy Keane has described the club as being “like a circus” following defender Lisandro Martinez’s remarks about its leadership.

Martinez made the comments after Tuesday’s 2-0 Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid, a result that extended the team’s run without a victory to five matches.

The Argentine defender questioned United’s failure to reinforce the squad during the summer after securing Champions League qualification. He said he had anticipated greater investment in the team and expected “more from our technical director [Jason Wilcox]”.

During an appearance on The Overlap, external podcast, Keane suggested that Martinez’s remarks illustrated the wider problems surrounding the club.

“Some supporters will welcome what he said, while others may feel he has disappointed the team, particularly because his own performances have not been at their best during this difficult period,” Keane said.

“It appears to represent what is happening throughout the club. There is clearly disorder, and the whole situation feels somewhat like a circus.

“When a team is enduring a challenging run like United, my concern about players speaking publicly is that they should first examine their own contribution before making these kinds of remarks.”

In a social media post on Wednesday, Martinez explained that his comments had been driven by “anger and frustration”.
