Former Everton and Rangers forward Duncan Ferguson has been appointed as the new manager of Irish Premiership side Glentoran in a surprise move.
The 54-year-old, who also represented Dundee United and Newcastle United while earning seven Scotland caps, joins the east Belfast team on what officials have described as a “multi-year contract”.
Ferguson’s coaching experience includes working as an assistant to respected managers Carlo Ancelotti and Rafael Benitez at Everton, as well as serving twice as caretaker manager.
More recently, he has held managerial positions at Forest Green Rovers and Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
His unexpected arrival comes after Declan Devine left his role as manager of the Irish League team in September.
Gary Bollan, a former Dundee United colleague who also worked alongside Ferguson at Inverness, has been appointed assistant manager.
Despite substantial backing from owner Ali Pour and a recent transition to a full-time professional structure, Glentoran have not secured the league championship since 2009.
“I am thrilled to take charge of Glentoran,” said Ferguson, who will begin his tenure with Saturday’s home fixture against Ballymena United at 15:00 BST.
“This is a major club with a proud tradition, and the position represents an excellent opportunity for me. I am fully aware of the responsibility attached to this role.
“My goal is to bring trophies to the club. Glentoran should compete for the league championship and every cup or shield available to us. Ultimately, my achievements here will be measured by the silverware we secure.
“My interest in the position grew with every conversation I had with Ali and sporting director Paul Millar. Their aspirations align with mine, and I am eager to begin training, work closely with the squad and discover what we can accomplish as a team.”
