Brighton: Can the prolific Seagulls truly challenge for the Premier League title?

News

Only seven teams in Premier League history have scored at least 23 goals in their opening seven matches. Six of them eventually secured a top-three finish, while Manchester City went on to claim the championship in both 2011-12 and 2022-23.

The only exception was Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle United side in 1994-95, who lost momentum and ended the campaign in sixth place. That team, famously known as ‘The Entertainers’, has already been compared with the confidence and attacking style displayed by the current Brighton squad.

Taking those comparisons into account, Alan Wares, co-host of the Albion Roar podcast, suggested that securing a Champions League spot may be a more achievable objective than mounting a serious challenge for the title.

“The Premier League season is only seven matches old, even though we have also played in other competitions. For us, the ambition is to maintain this level. I would not set a specific target; we should simply aim to finish as high as we can,” Alan said.

“The club clearly wants to qualify for the Champions League at the end of the campaign. We have started well, but it is far too soon to describe us as title challengers. At this stage, that remains an unrealistic idea. Still, every supporter is entitled to dream, so why should we not believe it is possible?”

“The key question is whether we can keep performing this way. If we can maintain our form and continue producing these results, then there is no reason not to be ambitious. We should aim as high as possible and see where it takes us.”

Balancing domestic commitments with Conference League fixtures could make it difficult for Brighton’s squad to keep pace with clubs such as Arsenal throughout the entire season. However, Leicester City’s remarkable 2015-16 success offers some encouragement. After seven matches of that title-winning campaign, they were eighth in the table with 12 points.
