“A former captain of the Georgian national side, he was an exceptional professional and a determined leader who proudly represented his country as well as clubs in Georgia and abroad.
“His unique approach to the game and unwavering dedication secured his place in Georgian sporting history.”
Nemsadze moved to Dundee during a period when manager Ivano Bonetti recruited several prominent players, including Argentine forward Claudio Caniggia. In 2010, he was welcomed into the Scottish Premiership club’s Hall of Fame.
He later served for a year as Dinamo’s sporting director before beginning his coaching career with the country’s young players. He also managed Shevardeni Tbilisi, Dila Gori and Dinamo.
Dundee published a tribute on their website: “Everyone associated with Dundee Football Club is profoundly saddened to learn of the death of former player and Hall of Fame member Giorgi Nemsadze.
“During his three and a half years at Dens, Giorgi created many memorable moments for Dundee supporters. The gifted midfielder also earned 17 appearances for Georgia while playing at the ground.
“In April 2010, the club honoured Nemsadze’s enduring bond with Dundee by inducting him into its Hall of Fame. He received the international award in a city he had once described as his ‘second home’.
“Supporters were able to watch him wear dark blue once more in 2015 when he took part in Julian Speroni’s testimonial match.
“The entire club sends its heartfelt sympathies to Giorgi’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.”
