England Claim First-Ever Cerebral Palsy World Cup Title

News

England claimed the Cerebral Palsy World Cup for the first time after securing a dramatic 2-1 victory over the United States in the final.

The hosts went ahead from a corner in Atlanta with only three minutes remaining, but Sam Dewhirst responded with an equaliser to send the match into extra time.

The Para Lions then sealed the title when David Porcher converted the rebound after Dewhirst’s effort had been stopped.

England cerebral palsy head coach Jack Rutter described the triumph as a landmark moment for the sport.

“It is an incredible feeling,” he said.

“The players and staff have made enormous sacrifices to accomplish this, and their commitment has been remarkable.

“We arrived hoping we might earn a medal, so it is difficult to believe that we have now lifted the World Cup for the first time.

“I am immensely proud of every player and staff member.”

The success followed England’s powerchair team’s defeat to France in Friday’s World Cup final., external
