England secured a hard-fought victory over Norway in Saturday’s World Cup last-eight clash, yet head coach Thomas Tuchel expressed visible unease.
“We created too many problems for ourselves,” Tuchel admitted. “The outcome is excellent, but I’m far from satisfied with how we played.”
He did follow these remarks by praising the squad’s character: “The determination, togetherness and refusal to give in really impressed me.
“At the same time, I’m a coach and I know we are capable of much more. The match kept swinging back and forth. Our own play made things harder than needed—careless, too many technical lapses, lacking speed and consistency.”
So, what was he hoping to see? And more crucially, if the team isn’t performing to its potential, what explains this string of wins?
