Even as the Football Association inquiry proceeds, Southampton are keeping their focus on the season ahead in the Championship.
Southampton’s proprietor Dragan Solak has already backed the manager, stating that Eckert will not be dismissed.
Speaking to the team’s internal outlets, he expressed his belief that Eckert warranted a further opportunity and that he offers his complete backing to the German tactician.
“It represents a major pledge from him,” Eckert remarked, adding that the owner’s support was “humbling and substantial”. “Such things become evident in difficult periods – among the players, the coaching staff, the ownership and the board.
“It requires some thought about the direction you wish to take the club. He made a swift choice, and I believe that stems from the connection and trust we’ve built.”
The entire spying controversy has sparked strong criticism from numerous figures external to the club, with Middlesbrough’s manager Kim Hellberg – whose side faced them in the play-off semi-finals – stating that every Championship outfit “ought to be furious”.
Eckert feels the upcoming campaign will be demanding for all involved at the team and its fanbase.
“Internally, and alongside the supporters, we must be more united than ever before – that’s the truth,” he continued.
“On the field, we have to improve in specific aspects, which is the purpose of pre-season, and be ready for the opening match against Watford.
“Ultimately, we simply have to demonstrate it all over again. In truth, nobody within the club is dwelling on past events.
“Nothing feels more distant than the previous fixture. That’s what we kept repeating at the start of the season, and it remains exactly the case now.”
Southampton begin their Championship journey with an away contest at Watford on 16 August.
