Paul Lambert thinks his former side Celtic are “nowhere near the required standard” without additional reinforcements – but has cautioned against “overreacting”.
Forward Camilo Duran remains the only summer arrival so far for the Scottish title holders, while midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has put pen to paper on a new contract after a short-term deal last season.
However, striker Kelechi Iheanacho and former loanee left-back Marcelo Saracchi, both of whom had been linked with returns, will not be coming back to Glasgow this campaign.
Iheanacho has joined Bursaspor on a free transfer, while Saracchi bid farewell to the Celtic faithful on social media, saying he and his agent “did everything we possibly could to make a Glasgow comeback happen”.
Additionally, German central defender Maik Nawrocki has been sold to Lens.
“The group is not strong enough,” Lambert stated on a Scottish radio sports programme.
“Having watched Celtic, they are nowhere near the level they need to be right now, not even close. Everyone can see it.
“They will challenge, but I don’t feel they have the depth to go and win the league again at this moment. The shortcomings were evident last season, so they are unlikely to suddenly disappear this time around.
“The squad was very, very thin last year. They won’t get away with that again – the manager is well aware of that.”
